Each week we'll be taking a field trip. We'll see a show each week. Some weeks we will also include a tours of a theatre or a theatrical district or meet with theatre professionals. You never know who you'll meet or see in London.

Course Description
This summer, London is your muse and your stage. We’ll immerse ourselves in this theatre wonderland, experiencing the raw emotion and magic of live shows and analyzing the literary genius of classic writers like Shakespeare and modern artists like Jez Butterworth. Armed with a new understanding of the basic elements of playwriting and surrounded by inspiration, you’ll take up the bardic tradition and write your own short play.

This course is an introduction to the process of playwriting. Through readings, attending performances, analyses, and exercises, we will explore the basic elements of a playscript (character, story vs. plot, theme, music, language, spectacle, setting, dialogue) and how a playwright utilizes these tools for dramatic effcct. Students will complete a number of writing exercises that will prepare them for their main project: writing and revising a 10-minute play.
